For brochure sites, services sites, clinics, restaurants, consultants, and other local business websites where the real goal is simple: stay discoverable without turning a small site into a restriction project.

Below: what to read first, which preset to test first, and which controls to leave alone until there is evidence.

Your main decision

For this persona, the real question is not "how do I block everything?"

It is "how do I keep search discovery clean, publish a readable policy, and avoid accidental damage on a low-complexity site?"

Best starting posture

Start with Essential.

Move to AI-First only if the business wants a clearer public AI stance.

Do not start with Fortress or a heavily customized stack unless the site already has a real archive, scraping, or policy-boundary problem.

Read in this order

If the owner wants a clearer public position on AI-related usage, then add:

Review modules in this order

  1. Search Engine Visibility
  2. Global Settings for sitemap handling and core rules
  3. Spam, Feeds & Crawl Traps only if low-value paths are actually creating noise
  4. AI and LLM Governance only if the business wants an explicit public stance
  5. Review & Save

Leave these alone until there is evidence

Common mistakes

  • reacting to AI anxiety by damaging normal search visibility
  • copying a larger site's restrictions onto a five-page business site
  • adding directives that nobody on the team can explain
  • publishing without checking the generated preview

A safe 30-minute first pass

  • choose Essential
  • confirm the search visibility preset
  • confirm the sitemap line in Global Settings
  • review search URLs, feed paths, and obvious crawl traps
  • preview the generated file in Review & Save
  • publish only when every directive has a clear business reason

Escalate only when

Escalate to a stricter posture when at least one of these becomes true:

  • crawl logs show noisy or abusive access
  • the business wants a public AI-policy position
  • archive capture becomes commercially or reputationally sensitive
  • the site grows into a more complex editorial or ecommerce structure
