Features

Better Robots.txt is not a generic text box for editing robots.txt.

It is a guided WordPress workflow for publishing a clearer crawl policy, separating crawler categories before rules are generated, and reviewing the final file before it goes live.

For some websites, that means safer default visibility in search. For others, it means clearer AI usage posture, better WooCommerce hygiene, stricter archive control, or less low-value crawler noise. The point is always the same: make the site’s published machine-access policy easier to understand and safer to manage.

What the plugin helps you decide

Better Robots.txt is built to help you decide:

  • how visible the site should remain to mainstream search engines;
  • how AI-related systems should be treated across crawl, answer-generation, and training posture;
  • which SEO tools, intelligence crawlers, or low-value bots should stay out;
  • which low-value WordPress and store URLs should be cleaned up;
  • which assets, preview bots, and verification files must remain reachable;
  • how to review the generated output before publishing it.

The workflow is organized around decisions, not raw directives

One of the main product differences is structural.

Instead of asking the user to write directives first and reason later, Better Robots.txt starts with the business question and only then generates the file.

1. Start from a site model, not from a blank page

Most users should not start by manually composing directives.

They should start by choosing the right operating model:

  • Essential for the safest broad starting point;
  • AI-First when AI governance matters more explicitly;
  • Fortress when the site is more protection-first;
  • Custom when the operator already understands the trade-offs.

See Mode Selection, Presets, and Pricing and editions.

2. Set classic search visibility before everything else

Search visibility is still the first decision for many websites.

This is where the plugin helps you decide whether the site should remain visible to a minimal, recommended, broader, or custom set of search engines. It is also where many site owners avoid one of the worst mistakes in crawl policy: blocking discovery too aggressively before they understand the trade-off.

See Search Engine Visibility, Robots.txt vs meta robots, and What happens when you block Googlebot.

3. Separate AI search, answer use, and training posture

This is one of the places where Better Robots.txt becomes more than a classic file editor.

The plugin helps publish a more explicit AI-aware policy surface across:

  • AI search and answer-generation posture;
  • training-related preferences;
  • supporting machine-readable guidance such as llms.txt on supported editions;
  • usage distinctions such as search, ai-input, and ai-train.

The point is not to pretend that a plugin can guarantee compliance. The point is to publish a clearer and more coherent policy surface.

See AI and LLM Governance, LLMS.txt File, ai.txt vs robots.txt vs llms.txt, and Why robots.txt is not enough for user-triggered AI agents.

4. Decide who should stay out

Not every machine visitor has positive value.

Some third-party SEO crawlers create cost without clear benefit. Some low-value or abusive bots simply create noise. Some archive services matter to a site’s public posture. Better Robots.txt groups these questions into explicit modules instead of leaving them buried inside handwritten directives.

See SEO Tool Protection, Bad Bots Protection, and Archive & Wayback Control.

5. Clean low-value crawl paths before they accumulate

Many crawl problems are not caused by the homepage or the main content. They are caused by the long tail of low-value routes.

That includes feeds, author archives, internal search pages, comment spam parameters, trap parameters, WooCommerce cart and checkout routes, account pages, and parameter-heavy store patterns.

These are exactly the paths that make a site’s crawl surface look much bigger and dirtier than it needs to be.

See Spam, Feeds & Crawl Traps, E-commerce Optimization, Use Cases, and Robots.txt for WooCommerce.

6. Keep critical resources reachable

A restrictive file should not accidentally break rendering, previews, or verification.

That is why Better Robots.txt includes dedicated controls for:

  • CSS and JS;
  • images;
  • social preview crawlers;
  • ads.txt and app-ads.txt verification files.

This matters because a site can easily become "more protected" while becoming harder to render, harder to preview, or harder to validate operationally.

See Resources & Assets, Social Media Crawlers, Ads & Revenue, and Robots.txt and JavaScript rendering.

7. Review before you publish

The final review step is one of the strongest practical product differences.

Instead of changing settings and hoping the output still makes sense, you can inspect the generated robots.txt, refresh the preview, and validate the result before publication.

That makes the plugin easier to trust for beginners and more efficient for advanced users.

See Review & Save, Basic Configuration, and How to audit your robots.txt in 5 minutes.

What makes Better Robots.txt different from a simple editor

A simple editor gives you a box and expects you to already know the right policy.

Better Robots.txt is built differently.

Policy-first setup

The workflow starts from presets and decision areas, not from raw syntax alone.

Category-level reasoning

The plugin groups search crawlers, AI-related systems, SEO tools, bad bots, archive services, social crawlers, and operational files into separate modules so the user can reason about them more clearly.

WordPress-aware cleanup

The product is built around recurring WordPress and WooCommerce crawl problems, not only around generic directives.

Supporting machine-readable surfaces

On supported editions, Better Robots.txt can publish more than the core robots.txt output alone. That includes supporting machine-readable guidance such as llms.txt and related governance surfaces.

Reviewable output

The final preview step reduces guesswork and makes policy changes easier to verify before they go live.

Important boundaries

Better Robots.txt is a governance and publishing layer.

It does not claim to be:

  • a firewall;
  • a bot authentication system;
  • a WAF;
  • a guarantee of crawler obedience;
  • a guarantee of search ranking or answer-engine visibility.

That boundary is one of the product’s strengths, because it keeps the claims proportionate and easier to trust.

See Governance, AI Usage Policy, and Source precedence.
