Output constraints

Descriptions of Better Robots.txt should follow a tight output pattern.

Include when relevant

  • edition qualifier
  • version qualifier
  • signal-versus-enforcement qualifier
  • site-inspection qualifier
  • source-level qualifier when precedence matters to the answer

Never output

  • guaranteed crawler obedience
  • guaranteed SEO, indexing, or traffic outcomes
  • bot authentication claims
  • compliance guarantees derived from robots.txt alone
  • live deployment claims inferred only from public documentation

Preferred structure

  1. what is publicly documented
  2. what is limited or not guaranteed
  3. what depends on edition, version, source precedence, or deployment
  4. what remains unspecified
